Theme discovery changing themes

Running theme discovery or making theme edits can alter the analysis you've previously shared, or other users have logged in and seen.

For example, adding new sub-themes under price made it more accurate, but also increased it's volume by 3% from 7% to 10%, which makes previous reporting on 7% seem inaccurate.

Generally adding the extra details to the themes is worth the changes to historical analysis because
  • The new themes help uncover new insightful topics and lead to better overall accuracy
  • Both the older and more recent data is analysed with the same themes list, so you're still able to trend between the new and older data effectively

Best practises for making theme changes

  • Constantly collect feedback from other Thematic users or stakeholders of your reporting to help make future theme discovery and refinement relevant. Collecting the feedback will also help identify changes that would provide the most benefit to everyone using the analysis.
  • Make your theme changes and discoveries in batches, so themes aren't left in an in-progress state for long.
  • Batching theme changes are easier to communicate to other Thematic users, or your reporting stakeholders so they can be prepared for any changes eg. Each quarter we'll run a discovery to improve the themes
