Theme Analysis

The Theme Analysis tool doesn't require dates or scores in your data set but will use them if they're available.

The Theme Analysis tool displays more information about a selected base or sub-theme.

  • Theme volume
  • Volume over time (If dates provided)
  • Impact over time (If score and dates provided)
  • Themes that occur alongside
  • Theme volume across filters

Selecting a theme

Select a base theme using the left drop-down menu or a specific sub-theme using the right drop-down menu. Themes are ordered alphabetically. You can also select a theme in the comparison or impact tool, and then switch to Theme analysis to keep that theme selected.

Theme volume

Displays the selected themes occurrence in all comments as a number and percentage. This number will update when you apply filters.

Volume over time (If dates provided)

Displays the frequency of the selected themes over recent time periods. You can mouse over each dot to see the exact number and percentage of responses. Open the options menu to display either the percentage or the actual number of comments, as well as different time periods on the x-axis.

Impact over time (If score and dates provided)

Displays the impact of the selected theme over recent time periods. You can mouse over each dot to see exact impact score and time period. Open the options menu to show either impact or average score of the theme.

Themes that occur alongside

This is a comparison tool with only comments tagged with the selected theme.

Theme volume across filters

Displays the themes frequency in each option in a filter. Select the filter using the drop-down menu. You can mouse over each bar to see the exact number and percentage of comments, as well as the filter name.

Open the options menu to change between raw number/percentage and difference/filter order.

Show (y-axis)
  • Percentage (selected by default): Shows the frequency as a percentage of comments
  • Count: Shows the frequency as the actual number of comments
Order by (x-axis)
  • Difference  (Selected by default): Orders the filters by greatest difference
  • Original: Orders the filters by their placement in the filter category

Filtering

Theme analysis is compatible with any filters, but any date filters applied will not affect the over time graph. Additionally applying a score filter will change the scores displayed. (eg. Filtering for only Promoters will change the impact score to 0 since all the data is a Promoter).

Applying a blue filter will keep the same visualizations the same, and applying an orange filter will add the following

Theme volume

Adds another section for the orange filtered set of data.

Volume over time

Adds another line on the graph for the orange filtered set of data. You can mouse over dots from both lines to see exact numbers and percentages.

Theme impact over time (Affected by score filters)

Adds another line on the graph for the orange filtered set of data. You can mouse over dots from both filtered sets of data to see exact impact score and time period. note: Filtering by score will affect the displayed impact (eg. Filtering for only 5-star reviews will make the impact scores 0, since all the data is 5-stars)

Themes that occur alongside

Adds orange bars for the orange filtered set of data. Acts exactly the same as a comparison graph with an orange filter.

Theme volume across filters

Adds orange bars for the orange filtered set of data. You can mouse over both bars and it will now show if the difference in theme frequency is statistically significant. Difference sorting for the x-axis will also now sort by the greatest difference in theme volume in the two filtered sets of data.
