How to use Theme Analysis
The Theme Analysis tool doesn't require location, date or scores in your data set but will use them if they're available.
The Theme Analysis tool allows you to view more details about a selected base or sub-theme.
- Total frequency
- Frequency over time
- Impact over time
- Themes that occur alongside
- Theme compared across other dimensions
Select a base theme using the left drop-down menu, and then a sub-theme using right drop-down menu. Themes are ordered alphabetically.
Analyzing selected theme
Displays the selected themes occurrence in all comments as a number and percentage. This number will update when you apply filters.
Location (Requires location data)
Displays the selected themes comment locations if location data is available. It doesn't account for population density or overall record density. Navigate the map by clicking and dragging, zoom in or out using the plus or minus in the bottom right. You can make the map fullscreen by clicking the expand button in the top right. Click the icon again, or the escape button to exit the fullscreen map.
Theme frequency over time (Requires date data)
Displays the frequency of the selected themes over recent time periods if date data is available. You can mouse over each dot to see number and percentage of responses, and the time period. Open the options menu to display either the percentage or the actual number of comments. You can also change the x-axis to different time periods if they're available in your data ie. Weekly, Monthly or Quarterly.
Theme impact over time (Requires score data)
Displays the impact of the selected theme over recent time periods, if score and date data is available. You can mouse over each dot to see exact impact score and time period. Open the options menu to show either impact or score over time.
Themes that occur alongside selected theme
This is a comparison tool that shows the most frequent base and sub-themes that occur in comments tagged with the selected theme.
Comparing selected theme across other dimensions
Displays the selected themes frequency in each filter in a filter category. Select the filter category using the drop-down menu, each filter will be labeled along the x-axis. You can mouse over each result to see the filter name, any applied filters and the exact number and percentage of comments.
Open the options menu to change between raw number/percentage and difference/filter order.
- Percentage (selected by default): Shows the frequency as a percentage of comments
- Count: Shows the frequency as the actual number of comments
Order by (x-axis)
- Difference (Selected by default): Orders the filters by greatest difference
- Original: Orders the filters by their placement in the filter category
Theme analysis is compatible with any filters you can apply, but adding score, date or other filters can mess with certain visualizations. Applying an orange filter will add additional data to

Comparing selected theme across other dimensions. (Affected by adding filters in the filter category selected)
You can mouse over both filtered sets of data and it will now show if the difference in frequency is statistically significant. Difference sorting for the x-axis will also now sort by great difference in the two filtered sets of data.
